Challenge
Author Chad Scott recognized early on that the traditional publishing route was not the best fit for his vision. Instead, he was drawn to the flexibility and artistic freedom that self-publishing offered, and understood that a project of the scale and ambition of Beyond the Darkness required the professional support that only Whitefox could provide. Chad sought a partner capable of ensuring the book would meet the highest production standards and carry the credibility necessary to open doors in the publishing industry and specialist retail markets. From the outset, he was clear about his desire for a highly professional, collaborative process that reflected the quality and ambition of the work.
Execution
Beyond the Darkness is an interdisciplinary work that is part travel writing, part personal development, and deeply rooted in psychology. Capturing this level of complexity required careful editorial judgement, high-quality design, and a targeted marketing strategy. With the United States as the primary market target, Whitefox ensured that the manuscript was developed in American English, whilst maintaining sensitivity to a global readership, particularly UK and European audiences, given the book’s thematic scope and historical focus. We worked closely with Chad, producing a trade paperback edition, an ebook, and a professionally narrated audiobook, making sure that each was produced to reflect both professional standards and the personal depth of the author’s voice. It was imperative that Chad retained creative input at each stage, and our primary role was to help him turn his clear vision into a polished final product.
Additionally, we designed and executed a marketing plan developing Amazon A+ content, targeted paid advertising across Facebook and Instagram, and strategically timed ebook promotions. We also facilitated a BookBub campaign to strengthen visibility in relevant categories and broaden the book’s reach.
Result
Since its publication, Beyond the Darkness has gained steady traction with readers and professionals alike. The book received a highly favourable review from Kirkus, earning the rare “Get It” verdict, an accolade typically reserved for noteworthy works. The review was later featured in the July 1st issue of Kirkus Reviews magazine, an honor extended to fewer than a quarter of Indie titles.
Further recognition came when Chad was named a finalist in the Reader’s Favourite Book Awards in the Travel Category, and the book was shortlisted for consideration in the Non-Obvious Book Awards. Beyond formal recognition, Chad has continued to build grassroots interest, hosting a well-attended signing at his local Minnesota bookstore, The Bookstore at Fitger’s, securing stock orders and events with institutions featured in the book.
Commercially, Beyond the Darkness continues to perform strongly in key categories on Amazon, maintaining steady visibility and sales. This success reflects the combined impact of Whitefox’s marketing strategies and Chad’s direct outreach.
