Creative control, thoughtful production and extraordinary international attention

Overview

  • Hardback and ebook publication of a major new biography based on Freddie Mercury’s lost diaries
  • Creative control retained by the author due to the sensitivity of the source material
  • Extensive international publicity, translation rights deals and a television documentary in development

Challenge

Following the success of his memoir Bootle Boy (Scribe, 2018), Les Hinton embarked on an ambitious new literary venture: the publication of his first novel. Dying Days is a tightly crafted thriller set against the backdrop of newspapers at the height of their influence and in their last great days—a landscape very well known to its author.

Drawing upon decades of experience at the highest levels of the global media industry, Les approached the project with clarity, purpose, and a precise vision for the book’s narrative, visual design, and reception among readers. While he initially hoped to pursue a traditional publishing route, Les was acutely aware of the shifting landscape of the publishing industry. Seeking efficiency, speed, and creative control, he turned to Whitefox to help bring the novel to life in a manner that aligned with his expectations, ensuring the project would come to fruition on his own terms and as seamlessly as possible.

Execution

Whitefox partnered with Lesley-Ann on every stage of the book’s development, from editorial assistance to producing a premium royal-format hardcover, complete with an accompanying ebook edition. Working closely with her creative brief, we secured the high-resolution cover image she had envisioned. We ensured that each step of the editorial, design, and production process reflected the sensitivity and magnitude of the story.

The response was immediate. Following the project’s announcement in the Daily Mail and MailOnline, Love, Freddie skyrocketed to the top of three Amazon charts, becoming an instant bestseller based on pre-orders alone. Global media quickly followed suit, with coverage spanning newspapers, websites, and television outlets worldwide.

International demand was strong and translation rights were quickly sold in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Brazil, with more territories still in negotiation. A television documentary tied to the book is now in production and awaiting global release, further proof of the astonishing cultural reach of this special project.
