Challenge

Following the success of his memoir Bootle Boy (Scribe, 2018), Les Hinton embarked on an ambitious new literary venture: the publication of his first novel. Dying Days is a tightly crafted thriller set against the backdrop of newspapers at the height of their influence and in their last great days—a landscape very well known to its author. Drawing upon decades of experience at the highest levels of the global media industry, Les approached the project with clarity, purpose, and a precise vision for the book’s narrative, visual design, and reception among readers. While he initially hoped to pursue a traditional publishing route, Les was acutely aware of the shifting landscape of the publishing industry. Seeking efficiency, speed, and creative control, he turned to Whitefox to help bring the novel to life in a manner that aligned with his expectations, ensuring the project would come to fruition on his own terms and as seamlessly as possible.

Execution

Whitefox worked with Les to develop a publishing plan that reflected both the quality of his writing and the topicality of the story. Drawing directly from his experience in British and American media, the novel retains an unmistakable authenticity. From editorial support to cover design, Les remained deeply involved at every stage, prioritizing creative collaboration and clear communication. The book was published as a trade paperback, accompanied by an ebook and an actor-narrated audiobook. We coordinated a traditional print run for the UK market and arranged print-on-demand to ensure wider availability across global territories, including the United States. Publicity was led by one of our most trusted partners, and the campaign significantly benefited from Les’s high profile and extensive network within the media industry. Despite an ambitious publication schedule, the process was executed smoothly and with focus, resulting in a polished, timely release that met Les’s expectations for both quality and reader reach.
